Our client was seeking to offset potential impact to seabirds through eliminating rats on target island to obtain a net increase.
The client wanted to assess the potential to increase nesting seabird populations on an island by eliminating predators, specifically rats, who predate on the ground and burrow nesting seabird eggs.
NBC environment created a working group of world leading consultants, Ian Cain of Environmental Management and Dr. Elizabeth Bell of Wildlife International. Under their direction NBC completed the field studies installing index lines of traps, trail cameras, wax blocks, ink traps and ink pads to obtain the data and specimens to enable the experts to complete their feasibility study observing the 7 criteria tests necessary for such a project. NBC also supported the project completing a census on bird populations and habitat which will enable a full assessment of the potential for colonies to increase should rats be eradicated.
This was carried out in Herm and Sark with the engagement and support of local stakeholders.
