Pigeon Droppings Health and Safety Risk for Maintenance Team
A prestigious college in Oxford was due to have some construction work carried out and part of the work meant that a maintenance access would be required through a flying buttress situated on one of the medieval buildings.
The only problem was that pigeons had decided that this would be a great place to live meaning that any access would have to be through pigeon guano (droppings). Whilst it’s safe to clean up the odd bird dropping, handling bird droppings of any quantity should be done with care due to the risk from disease. Large quantities should be handled by an experienced professional and disposed of safely. As well as being unsightly the acidic nature of bird droppings can even cause damage to the fabric of buildings which in turn, leads to higher cleaning and repair bills.
The difficulty here was to protect the area with a net whilst leaving it accessible should further maintenance be required.
Our Solution
In order to prevent the issues with pigeon guano we were asked to come up with a solution that would mean pigeons were excluded from the area but access was still possible. In these cases the usual method would be to install a net with access zips. However in this case the access openings would be small and the use of a zip would not work.
The NBC Oxford team came up with and installed a solution that involved creating a net “curtain” that could be opened and closed when access was required. The result was that pigeons could not go through to the protected area but maintenance teams could.
