Preventing Bed Bugs

Ways to Prevent Bed Bugs

It is difficult to prevent the spread of bed bugs. Adult bed bugs can lie dormant for months and in some circumstances can live up to a year without feeding. Here are our top tips to control and prevent bed bugs in your home.

AdobeStock 169234313Washing: If you do find beg bugs immediately wash all infested items on a hot wash (60°C) or tumble dry on a hot setting for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Freezing: For belongings that are not washable, place the infested items in a bag and put them in freezer for at least three days. This will ensure that all life stages of the pests have been destroyed

Vacuuming: Bed begs are found in clean and dirty places but vacuuming regularly will allow you to spot the critters sooner.  Thoroughly clean all areas of you house and prevent a build-up of dust.

Sealing: Another recommendation is to seal all the cracks and crevices near your bed frame, skirting boards and other furniture to prevent hiding bed bugs.

Inspection: Before moving into a new home, bringing second-hand furniture into your home or staying away check your luggage and clothing carefully for bed bugs and their eggs.
