NBC Environment were contacted by Laing O’Rourke on Behalf of The Royal Sussex County Hospital – Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust to advise and provide a solution to remove bulk fouling and sanitise scaffolding prior to removal from site.
The scaffolding had been present for a number of years. With a high feral pigeon population in the area and roosting within the scaffolding framework, there were a number of areas with a high level build up of pigeon faeces on the scaffolding, building fabrication and patient walkways.
Had the scaffolding been removed prior to the removal of guano this would have result in a large amount of dry guano being made airborne at height above entry doors and ward windows.
The scaffolding was installed over the main 999 emergency entrance route and through road and a constant flow of traffic, advance notice had to be gained from the NHS trust to ensure we could create a partial road closure whilst be prepared to stop works at any given notice to allow blue light emergency traffic.
NBC consulted with the client and agreed a day of scheduled works advance in time, this allowed for the partial closure of the road. Two IPAF Trained Operatives were able to work independently from a mobile elevated working platform to complete the bulk fouling removal and biocide clean of the scaffold poles and boarding ensuring they were safe for removal.
Whilst cleaning the top of the scaffolding areas of the roof that had not been seen from the ground for a number of years due to the scaffolding, it was identified there was a serious build- up of guano around former light fittings and steelwork of the building fabrication, the operatives completed this whilst they were there.
The project was mobilised and carried out over one day enlisting the support of a specialist IPAF Trained wildlife operatives completing two scaffolding towers consecutively completing a removal of bulk fouling and biocide treatment to ensure the safe removal of scaffolding.
“I would just like to thank you and your team on the professional manner that the site operation of cleaning the pigeon guano from the scaffold on the Brighton 3TS project. From the first site visit from yourself to the operation taking place it was done to the highest standards. Your men finished the works 1 day early which took strain off the NHS trust as we were working in live traffic. Much appreciated by all.”
